Suchitwa Mission
Total Sanitation Campaign was started/launched with the broad /grand vision of achieving a zero waste India. Total mSanitation Campaign launched in Idukki District in 2004. In 2012 April TSC was renamed as Nirmal Bharat Abhyan and later Swachh Bharat Mission in 02.10.2014. The mission aims to ensure sanitary toilet facility to all households, sufficeient sanitation facility to schools, Anganwadies, Public offices and institutions.
Further motivating and enabling public and local self government institutions through IEC programmes to install and maintain adequate sanitation and waste management facilities on their own. Swachh Bharat (G) deals with the sanitation and waste management requirements of rural local bodies and population while Swachh Bharat Mission (U) meets the sanitation and waste management needs of urban Local bodies and population.
District panchayat president is the chairperson and district collector is the Executive Director of District Suchitwa Mission. District Mission achieved ODF status by providing/ensuring access to sanitary toilets. Now it’s main concern is Source Level Waste. District Mission propagates the significance of source level segregation of waste in scientific waste management. Further it enhances green protocol principles via strict avoiding of disposables and reduce, reuse, recycle policies. District Suchitwa Mission has successfully implemented green protocol in a number of big events like district YKalolsavam, M G University Kalolsavam, etc. Motivated by district Suchitwa Mission a number of local bodies are observing Green Protocol strictly in all functions and evets like marriages, carnivals and festivals.

Community Sanitary Complexes
Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs) comprises an appropriate number of toilet seats, bathing cubicles, washing platforms, wash basins etc. CSCs can be setup in a place in the village acceptable and accessible to all. Ordinarily such complexes shall be constructed only when there is lack of space in the village for construction of household toilets and community/GP owns up the responsibility of their operation and maintenance and gives a specific demand for the same. The maximum support per unit prescribed for a community sanitary complex is Rs. 2 Lakh. Sharing pattern amongst central government, state government and community shall be in the ratio 60:30:10
Individual household Latrines
The mission aims to ensure that all rural families have access to toilets. The incentive amount provided under SBM (G) to the beneficiary shall be upto Rs. 12000 for construction of one unit of IHHL and the central and state share of this incentive shall be Rs. 9000 and Rs.3000 respectively. In addition to Rs.12000 an amount of Rs. 3400 may be given by the Panchayath and the unit cost may be considered as 15400 in Kerala.Freedom from open defecation has been proven to lead to significant health benefits in terms of incidences of water-borne diseases, especially in children, and provide safety and dignity for all, especially women and senior citizens.
The Idukki District became declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). The declaration was formally made by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on November 01, 2016.
Solid and Liquid Waste Management
Solid and Liquid Waste Management is one of the key component of SBM(G) as its objective is to bring-in improvements in the cleanliness, hygiene and general quality of life in rural areas.
